Chinese military police at Barkhor in front of Jokhang, Lhasa (Erik Törner,Tibet 2003)
The Barkhor square is renowned as China’s second most heavily guarded spot, after Tiananmens square. True or not, police is always present side by side with the religious fervour that always surrounds the Jokhang.
The Jokhang, also called the Jokang, Jokhang Temple, Jokhang Monastery or Tsuklakang (gTsug lag khang), is located on Barkhor Square in Lhasa. It was founded during the reign of king Songsten Gampo.
For most Tibetans it is the most sacred and important temple in Tibet. It is in some regards pan-sectarian, but is presently controlled by the Gelug school.
Lhasa is the administrative capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in the People’s Republic of China and the second most populous city on the Tibetan Plateau, after Xining. At an altitude of 3,490 metres (11,450 ft), Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world. It contains many culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Jokhang, Potala and Norbulingka palaces.
