Evolution of PLAAF doctrine/training

This is the part 4 in the series of reviewing the content of the recent book that I read. I will be looking at the evolution of PLAAF training and doctrine. This is one area that is hard to write about, because we simply don't have many English based sources and the Chinese sources often seem like propaganda pieces. The recent book by CMSI really did a good job on this topic and I hope that this piece will provide even more for PLAAF watchers. In October of 1949, USSR sent 878 experts to China to build a flight academy and supply 434 training aircraft. Eventually, 6 fighter academy and 2 bomber academies were built. Due to Korean War, they rushed 350 pilots through the first academy in one year and did not even train in night combat or complex weather conditions. By May 1951, PLAAF had 17 aircraft divisions and 34 regiments. They served mostly in secondary role to Soviet Air Force in confrontation against USAF. As USSR was withdrawing from its former base in Lushun to retur...

China creates Two New Military Aerial Teams

Image
China's air force will introduce two new aerobatic teams this week in a sign of the military's growing public profile and sophistication. Both aerial demonstration units will make their debut at an air show in the northeastern city of Changchun. Earlier this year, the air force began flight-testing its first stealth fighter jet. The teams are known as the Sky Wing and the Red Falcons. Both will include experienced flight instructors and top-ranked pilots, and perform using two new Chinese-made training jets. The military says the teams will promote international exchanges with foreign air forces. The teams will perform Thursday with the 50-year old August First Air Demonstration Team of the People's Liberation Army Air Force. The 16-member Sky Wing demonstration team will be attached to the Chinese Air Force Aviation University, the alma mater of Yang Liwei, the first Chinese astronaut. The 18-member Red Falcon demonstration team will be based at the Third Flying College of...

EADS North America reported the company has delivered more than half of the planned 345 Lakotas to the U.S. Army. The UH-72A Lakota, built by the company's American Eurocopter business unit, is one of the U.S. Army's most successful acquisition programs. "Reaching the midway point in deliveries to the Army with an unblemished record of on-time deliveries is an excellent example of our strong performance on the Lakota program," said EADS North American Chief Executive Officer Sean O'Keefe. China/Russia military cooperation

This is the part 3 in the series of reviewing the content of the recent book that I read. In the past, I have often been harsh toward the recent China/Russia military cooperation. I have frequently stated that the Russians have limited military technology that it can interest China with. I have also read many cases of bad quality and servicing & support of export Russian weapons. However, it is important to state clearly that China would not be where it is today without its military cooperation with Russia. In fact, this article will look at all of the areas that USSR and Russia have assisted in China military industrial complex. Although sometimes unwillingly, USSR/Russia has assisted China's military industry than any other nation. In fact, I would say that this military relationship has yielded more benefit for China than any other military relationship has yielded for any nation. Back when PRC first founded, Chinese leaders went to their big brother in Soviet Union t...

Chile opts for refurbished U.S. howitzers

Image
Santiago, Chile (UPI) Aug 24, 2011 -Chile will spend $7 million as part of its long-standing plan to build a mechanized artillery battalion in which refurbished U.S.-made howitzers will play a significant part. Chile has been canvassing for the U.S. artillery-related systems to join its inventory for the planned battalion and was granted clearance for the move as far back as 2009. However, it's taken the process all this time to reach the present level and it may still be a while before the refurbished howitzer units enter the Chilean armed services. The Chilean request centers on 24 of the BAE Systems' M109 tracked self-propelled howitzers, 24 of which the Latin American country already owns. It also includes necessities such as shells, tracking radars and accompanying personnel carriers. Chile has two models of the M109 self-propelled howitzer in service and the new order is likely to double its available fleet to a total of 48, a Pentagon announcement said. Chile's curr...

Raytheon Approach to DARPA Project Applicable For All Military Services

Image
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 23, 2011 -An ongoing series of Raytheon trade studies for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Persistent Close Air Support (PCAS) program revealed there is broad, cross-service applicability to Raytheon's proposed solution. Raytheon's proposed PCAS solution will develop technologies that significantly reduce the timeline for close air support through improved coordination among Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs), airborne sensors and weapons. "Because we are a mission systems integrator and are designing to the effect, not the platform, our flexible solution is as relevant to Marines, Soldiers and Sailors as it is to Airmen," said Bob Francois, vice president of Advanced Missiles and Unmanned Systems for Raytheon Missile Systems. "We're the world leaders in designing, building and integrating precision-guided munitions, so figuring out smarter ways to employ weapons falls within our area of expertise." Raytheon...

Revolutionary material dramatically increases explosive force of weapons

Image
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 22, 2011 -A revolutionary material that will replace steel in warhead casings will bring added lethality and increase the likelihood of a hit on an enemy target, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced August 10. By combining several metals with standard manufacturing techniques, High-Density Reactive Material (HDRM) has the potential to dramatically increase the explosive impact of most weapons with little or no compromise in strength or design. Unlike conventional munitions, the innovative materials approach integrates the casing with approved warhead explosives for increased lethality. In addition, the unique design for fragmenting warheads allows release of chemical energy after impact, increasing the probability of a catastrophic kill. "Recent testing and demonstrations have consistently shown that the new casings can be integrated into naval missiles and are durable enough to withstand both high acceleration of missile launch and the forces expos...

China may have examined US stealth chopper: report

Image
Washington (AFP) Aug 15, 2011 - Pakistan probably let Chinese engineers examine the wreckage of a top-secret US stealth helicopter that crashed during the raid killing Osama bin Laden, The New York Times reported. Citing unnamed officials, the newspaper said late Sunday US intelligence agencies concluded that it was likely that Chinese engineers -- at the invitation of Pakistani spies -- took detailed photographs of the severed tail of the Black Hawk helicopter equipped with classified technology designed to elude radar. The Financial Times also carried the report, which was denied by Pakistani and Chinese officials. Relations between Pakistan and the United States are at their lowest ebb, strained by the covert American raid that killed bin Laden near Pakistan's main military academy and Pakistan's earlier detention of a CIA contractor. President Barack Obama's administration recently suspended about one-third of its $2.7 billion annual defense aid to Pakistan, but assured...

Russia set to show off its first stealth fighter

Image
Moscow (AFP) Aug 16, 2011 -Russia on Tuesday unveiled its first stealth fighter to the public, lifting the curtain on a secret project designed to flood the market with cheaper versions of better-known US jets. The Sukhoi Tu-50, being developed jointly by Russia and India, made its maiden flight at a Far East airbase in January 2010 and was rolled out for public viewing at the MAKS international airshow outside Moscow. Two of the sleek silver prototypes are due to perform air stunts Wednesday under the watchful eye of Russia's powerful prime minister, Vladimir Putin, in a show of Russian military confidence in the much-delayed project. "The T-50 jet will provide the backbone not only of the Russian air force but also that of India," said Mikhail Pogosyan, president of United Aircraft Corporation, the state aviation holding company. Raytheon Completes Fifth Small Diameter Bomb II Tri-Mode Seeker in New Factory

Image
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 18, 2011 -Raytheon has built the fifth Small Diameter Bomb II seeker in its new factory expressly designed to assemble integrated tri-mode seekers. "Raytheon is the only company building integrated tri-mode seekers on a 'hot' production line and we're doing it less than a year after contract award," said Harry Schulte, vice president of Air Warfare Systems for Raytheon Missile Systems. "Producing seekers in an active factory is one of the reasons Raytheon can keep its commitment to deliver SDB II to the warfighter on cost and on schedule." SDB II's seeker fuses millimeter-wave radar, uncooled imaging infrared and semiactive laser sensors on a single gimbal. The result is a powerful integrated seeker that seamlessly shares targeting information between modes, enabling the weapon to engage fixed or moving targets around the clock in adverse weather conditions. "Building integrated tri-mode seekers is much more complicated t...

The legacy of Liu Huaqing

Recently, I've read a couple of books regarding the development of Chinese air force. More than anything else, this one book by a well known poster on Chinese bbs has really changed many perceptions I've had regarding the modernization of PLAAF doctrine and training. I would say that anyone who has frequented top Chinese language forums would know who I'm referring to. Over the next few weeks, I plan to write several entries on different aspects of PLAAF modernization. The first topic that I decided to make is the legacy of Liu Huaqing, since he is forever linked to the Chinese Aircraft Carrier program. If you do a search of Liu Huaqing, you are most likely going to see articles describing him as the father of modern Chinese navy. His following quote has accompanied him everywhere Without an aircraft carrier, I will die with my eyelids open; the Chinese Navy needs to build an aircraft carrier, Liu served as the commander of the Chinese Navy from 1982 to 1987. After th...

"Look out! China's got drones..Forget about China's first aircraft carrier, the U.S. military has a whole new reason to be scared." wrote today's GlobalPost ( Here ) After seeing yet another alarmist article by people with only a passing interest, I have been contemplating about writing a small computer program that can cut-and-paste keywords on the Chinese military development. Forget about Chinas anti-satellite test, China got anti ship ballistic missile. Forget about Chinas anti ship ballistic missile, China got J-20 stealth fighter. Forget about Chinas J-20 stealth fighter, China got an aircraft carrier Forget about Chinas drones, China got Tie-fighters. Forget about Chinas Tie-Fighters, China got Star Destroyers Forget about Chinas Star Destroyers, China got Death Star. Poor J-20, you were media's darling only 6 months ago and now you are completely forgotten. What happened?
